How to Lodge a Rental Bond in Tasmania: MyBond Step by Step
Why Lodgement Matters (and the Deadline You Cannot Miss)
Every rental bond in Tasmania must be lodged with the Rental Deposit Authority through MyBond. An owner must not receive bond money directly from a tenant; Section 25(4)(a) of the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 prohibits it.
Property agents who receive bond funds have 10 working days to deposit them with the RDA. A private landlord must complete the MyBond lodgement and have the tenant pay the RDA directly; the owner must not receive the bond. A "working day" excludes weekends and state-wide public holidays.
Step 1: Register Your MyBond Owner Account
Before you can lodge anything, you need a MyBond account. Registration requires two-factor authentication through a verified mobile number or email address. Each landlord needs their own account — credential sharing between co-owners, family members or assistants is prohibited under the portal's terms of use.
If you're taking over self-management from a property agent, you'll need to complete a "Transfer Management" request in MyBond so the bond record moves from the agent's account to yours.
Step 2: Get the Tenant's Tenant ID
This is the step most first-time landlords miss. The tenant must register their own MyBond account independently, which generates a unique Tenant ID. You need that ID to create the lodgement.
Tell the tenant to register at mybond.tas.gov.au before settlement day. If they don't have the ID ready when you need to create the lodgement, the whole process stalls — and your statutory deadline keeps running.

Step 3: Create the Bond Lodgement
Log into MyBond and select "New Bond Lodgement." You'll enter:
- The rental property address
- Lease start date and duration
- Weekly rent amount
- Total bond amount (maximum four weeks' rent)
- Full legal names, email addresses and mobile numbers for every tenant on the lease
For tenancies supported by a third-party deposit contributor — such as Anglicare Tasmania, Loreto Community Housing or a Homes Tasmania program — select the contributor from the MyBond list at this stage so the organisation receives a notification to pay the RDA directly.
Step 4: Payment
Once you complete the MyBond lodgement, the tenant receives a notification to pay the bond to the RDA. They can pay online through MyBond or at a Service Tasmania shop using the bond barcode or number.
All bond lodgements are managed online through MyBond. If you cannot access the portal, contact Rental Services on 1300 654 499 or visit a Service Tasmania shop for help with your Owner ID.
Step 5: Bond Lodgement Certificate
Once the RDA confirms cleared funds, it issues a digital Bond Lodgement Certificate to everyone on the record — landlord, tenant(s) and any deposit contributor. This certificate confirms the bond is properly lodged and the RDA now holds the funds.
Keep a copy. You'll need the bond reference number for any future claim, dispute or tenant transfer.
What Happens If You Lodge Late?
Failure by an agent to lodge within the statutory deadline, or an owner receiving a bond directly, is an offence under Section 25(3) or 25(4)(a). The maximum penalty is 50 penalty units — currently $10,650 at the 2026–2027 indexed rate of $213 per unit.
Beyond the fine, lodging late can leave the bond record incomplete when you need to make a claim. A tenant who discovers you held their bond privately can report the breach to Consumer Affairs Tasmania.
